Jeanie Johnston Famine Ship and EPIC
Our Great Famine in Ireland project recently took a day trip to Dublin.
We enjoyed a guided tour of the Jeanie Johnston Famine Ship, learning about the incredible journey Irish people took to America and the harsh conditions they endured. We continued to the EPIC Irish Emigration Museum, where we discovered more about how Ireland’s rich history helped shape the world. Project funded by The Department of Foreign Affairs.
Strokestown Residential
Participants in our Great Famine in Ireland Project enjoyed a memorable and educational residential trip to Strokestown. The visit allowed us to dispel some of the myths around this significant period in our history while also enjoying time together as a group.
Our journey began with a visit to Cavan County Museum. We had the privilege of listening to Catherine, who delivered a talk on the effects of the Famine in County Cavan specifically. Her presentation highlighted the local impact of the famine and helped us to better understand the experiences of people in the region during that devastating time.
Afterward, we explored the museum’s fascinating exhibits. A sincere thank you to everyone at Cavan County Museum for their hospitality. We then travelled to Longford, and had some free time to explore the town before continuing on to our accommodation at the Abbey Hotel. The hotel staff took excellent care of us, and we enjoyed a evening meal together.
The following morning, we visited the Strokestown Park Famine Museum. The museum is located on the Strokestown Park Estate and tells the story of the Great Famine through powerful exhibitions, personal accounts and a tour of the house of Major Denis Mahon who was the Landlord of Strokestown who was shot and killed during the Great Famine of Ireland.
A lovely time was had by all. We learned so much, strengthened friendships, and enjoyed great company throughout the visit. It was an enriching and memorable experience for everyone involved.
Everyone who participated came away a new and deeper understanding of The Great Famine in Ireland.

PRONI Visit
We have had a fantastic start to our ‘Great Famine in Ireland’ project. With a visit to PRONI in Belfast and workshops in Tandragee Golf Club. Learning more about the myths and facts of our local history.
